General functions:
Under the overall supervision
of the Director, Regional Office for the Mediterranean and Chief of Mission in Italy and Malta and in
coordination with the Head of the
Migration Management Unit and the direct supervision of the Field Officer, the incumbent will be responsible for
assisting the IOM Field Officer in the daily implementation of the GOI/EC
project ÒConsolidating reception
capacities of migratory flows in Lampedusa and other strategic border points of
Southern Italy – Preasidium
Ó.
In particular the incumbent will:
1) Participate in all
the information and counselling sessions envisaged for the migrants hosted in
the reception camp facilities in Sardinia and provide interpretation from the
native language of the migrants into Italian and/or English;
2) Secure mutual
understanding between the IOM Field officer/staff and the migrants, ensuring
that main diversities as regards culture, traditions and/or religion are given adequate attention and
consideration in order to build necessary confidence with the migrants and
maximize effect of the counselling/information activity;
3) Translate from Italian/English
into the native language of the migrants the IOM standard information package
prepared for dissemination and migrants counselling, as well as any other
information material necessary for the duly information given to migrants on
their rights and duties on the Italian territory;
4) Ensure that the
overall cultural mediation activity is always carried out in close cooperation
with the IOM Field Officer/staff and the camp authorities, in an objective and
impartial way;
5) Support the IOM
Field Officer/staff and the camp authorities in identifying vulnerable groups
and migrants in need of special treatment;
6) Be available to
interchange with the other cultural mediators and interpreters assigned to the
other organisations within the when specific language skills are required by a
given situation, in a team spirit approach and for the ultimate interest of the
migrants hosted in Sardinia.
7) Assist the IOM
Field Officer/staff in planning and organizing information sessions (individual
and in groups) for interested in-coming irregular migrants, in coordination
with local authorities, and the other organisations.

Perform other related service, as required.

Desirable Qualifications
Education and
Experience: a) University degree in Social Sciences, specific
education/specialization in cultural mediation or interpretation or concrete
experience of at least 3 years.
Competencies: a) Excellent
communication and negotiation skills b) personal commitment, efficiency
c) ability to work under pressure and in a difficult setting d) team spirit approach e) Italian or international valid driving
license required.
Languages: Arabic
mother tongue, fluent Italian and English and/or French, both spoken and
written;
NOTE:
* The
tenure of contract of staff members holding a regular contract will remain
unchanged.
